Always use energy saving light bulbs
They use only a fraction of the energy compared with standard bulbs. They can also last up to ten times longer, so not only do they save you money on running costs, they also need to be replaced less.

Appliances over 10 years old tend to be a lot less efficient than more modern ones on sale today.
If you are thinking of replacing an appliance, buy an energy efficient model even if it costs a little more. Remember the running costs are lower and the overall cost to yourself will be less over its lifetime.

Fridges
Try to keep the fridge door shut as much as possible.
Defrost your fridge frequently and check the door seals are not damaged.
Avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the fridge as this will increase the temperature in the fridge and in turn increases the energy required to cool the contents down again.
Avoid putting your fridge next to heat generating appliances such as an oven or boiler.

Freezers
Try to keep the freezer closed as much as possible.
Avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the freezer as this will increase the temperature inside and in turn increases the energy required to cool the interior down again.
Avoid putting your freezer next to heat generating appliances such as an oven or boiler.
If possible, keep the freezer in a cool room or garage.

Cookers
Use a pan which is the same size as the cooker ring to prevent heat escaping up the side of the pan.
Use lids on saucepans as much as possible, this makes the contents heat up faster and uses less electricity.
Consider using pressure cookers, steamers and microwaves which use less energy to heat the food.
Always set your oven temperature to what is needed, higher settings do not heat the oven any quicker.

If you are looking at buying a new cooker, think about a gas oven as it costs less to run.
If you have to choose electric, a fan assisted oven will help to save you energy as they use approximately 20% less electricity than conventional ovens.
Also remember microwaves can use up to 85% less energy than conventional ovens.

Dishwashers
Modern dishwashers can use less energy and water than washing up by hand.
If you have a dishwasher always have a full load before you use it.
If your dishwasher has an economy setting use it.
Make sure that the machine is free of limescale as this effects the energy needed to heat the water.
Remember to turn your dishwasher off on the wall when not in use.

Washing machines
Most of the energy a washing machine uses is for heating the water.
Modern washing powders and detergents work just as effectively at lower temperatures.
Set the temperature at 40 degrees and only use the washing machine when you have full loads.
Make sure that the machine is free of limescale as this effects the energy needed to heat the water.
If you are looking at buying a new washing machine, make sure it is an Energy Saving one.
Remember to turn your machine off on the wall when not in use.

Drying
In the summer, dry your clothes outside rather than using your tumble dryer.
When drying your clothes indoors don’t put them directly on the radiators as this stops the heat from reaching the rest of the room.

Kettles
Use an electric kettle to heat water rather than a pan or kettle on an electric hob.
Only heat the amount of water that you need.
Limescale can also effect the efficiency of your kettle. If you do get  limescale in your kettle you can treat it with vinegar or a commercially available product .
